Our history, mission, and the people behind the work of preserving Mastic Peninsula's heritage.
The Mastic Peninsula Historical Society was founded in 1999 by Rita Rech, driven by a passion for preserving the history of one of Long Island's most storied coastal communities.
The Society's very first project was advocating for the preservation of an Early-American home known as the "Murray House" (circa 1830, also known as the Petty House). Although the restoration was a private undertaking, members observed and documented the project as much as was practical and permissible โ a commitment to careful historical record-keeping that remains central to our work today.
Another early initiative brought us into partnership with the staff of the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, helping to identify the people and places depicted in historical photographs of the Mastic area โ giving names back to faces that time had nearly forgotten.
One of our most visible accomplishments has been the production of the "Map of Historical Sites" within the Tri-Hamlet area โ a guide to the many historic locations within the Society's charter area, aimed at students, historians, residents, and visitors alike. To date, over 15,000 copies have been distributed to the public.
The Society is currently focused on the preservation of the Lane Family Cemetery, advocating for its protection and recognition as an important historical site within the community.
Our future goals include:
We are a not-for-profit organization made up of dedicated community volunteers โ residents, historians, educators, and anyone with an interest in local history. New members are always welcome and wanted.
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in local history. No special qualifications required โ just curiosity and a love of community.
