Celebrating 250 Years of Independence
Suffolk County ยท 1776 โ€” 2026

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Mastic Peninsula: A Revolutionary Heartland

The Mastic Peninsula played a remarkable role in the American Revolution. William Floyd โ€” a Mastic resident โ€” signed the Declaration of Independence on August 2, 1776. General Nathaniel Woodhull was captured and killed by the British near here. In November 1780, Colonel Benjamin Tallmadge and 80 dragoons rowed across the Long Island Sound and raided the Manor of St. George in Mastic โ€” the famous "Battle of Mastic." The Purple Heart was later awarded to a soldier who fought here. This community is not just watching the 250th Anniversary โ€” it is the 250th Anniversary.

Suffolk County is celebrating America's 250th birthday with events, exhibitions, lectures, tours, and festivals throughout 2026. Click any event below to find full details on the Suffolk 250 website.
